Museum Information
Located within the historic Dutch Fort of Galle, the Maritime Archaeology Museum is Sri Lanka’s leading museum dedicated to maritime heritage and underwater archaeology. Housed in a 17th-century Dutch warehouse built above the Old Gate of the fort, the museum presents the island’s rich connections to the Indian Ocean trade networks that linked Asia, the Middle East, and Europe for centuries.
The museum features artifacts recovered from historic shipwrecks, including the Dutch vessels Avondster and Hercules, as well as collections of ceramics, navigation equipment, weapons, and trade goods. Through exhibits, models, replicas, and multimedia displays, visitors can explore Sri Lanka’s maritime history, traditional fishing culture, coastal communities, and marine ecosystems. Reopened in 2010 after extensive restoration following the 2004 tsunami, the museum serves as an important center for preserving and interpreting Sri Lanka’s underwater cultural heritage.
